Obama's Healthcare Speech
I know, it's about a week too late. I'm still kinda new at this.
The time for games has passed. The time for bickering is over!
I will not accept the status quo as a solution! Not this time, Not now!
That's why tonight, I am proposing timid baby steps in the general direction of slow, incremental reform.
I will not be satisfied until our healthcare system is this much less crappy.
You know, if that's Ok with the insurance companies.
And the republicans. Gotta be bi-partisan!
And the teabaggers. Wouldn't want to upset them!

Glenn Beck is a Fucking Liar
Not that it comes as any surprise, but Glenn Beck went on the air today to lie about the attendance at his 9/12 teabagger orgy of misdirected rage. Beck claimed that "The London Telegraph is now saying that the number is over a million. They quote a source from the park service, the National Park Service saying that it is the largest march on Washington ever. . ."
". . . Now you’re not going to get that in the mainstream press in America, but that is what The Daily Mail is reporting today.”
Of course the reason that you won't hear that number in the mainstream press in America is that it is blatantly untrue. Another place where you won't get it is The London Telegraph!
Here's what the London Telegraph actually said: "There was no official crowd count. Organisers, who had expected between 25,000 and 50,000, put the total at 75,000 but many estimated that it was much higher."
So where did Beck get the One Million figure? Who the fuck knows? Maybe he thinks he saw that figure somewhere, maybe he's thinking of the million-man march, maybe he's just making shit up out of thin air. It's always hard to tell with someone like Beck whether he's lying or delusional.
Here's the audio:
See, this is why you can't reason with people like this. You can point out to them, hey it says right here in the paper that the crowd was probably about 20,000 to 50,000 . (Nico Pitney: “I’d put crowd at 10-20k. Only crowded area is b/w Capitol and 3rd. First part of mall is 1/4 full.” David Schuster: “I’ve covered rallies at dc capitol for 20 years. When the crowd goes only as far as 3rd st, it is 50,000 or less.”)And if you did that, a normal person would say, "oh I guess I must have heard wrong." But a paranoid conspiracy theorist like Beck will say, "Oh, sure the mainstream media isn't going to give you the real truth, they're in on it!"
Which is why everyone in DC should just ignore these teabaggers and get on with the business of healthcare reform. You're not ever going to convince this small group of wackadoodles that there aren't death panels or that Nazi Communists aren't pulling the strings behind the scenes. Just ignore them. By adressing their concerns, you just give them a veneer of legitimacy.
