Santorum Calls Bullshit

http://www.opposingviews.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/300x250/featured_image/santorumexplodes.png
This is my tough-guy face, mister! Plenty more where this came from!

Here's a sentence I never ever expected to type:
Rick Santorum is right.
Not about anything else, just about this. That was a bullshit question. And if anyone knows bullshit, it's Rick Santorum.

But he did say that Romney was the worst Republican to run against Barack Obama, not the worst Republican in general. So Santorum called Bullshit. What's the reaction from the righties?

Rick Santorum's 'Bullshit' Comment Is No Big Deal

March 27, 2012 Former Sen. Rick Santorum used a mild expletive to chastise a journalist recently. And despite all the media and political attention the episode has received, it's really not a BFD.

To me, Rick Santorum usually comes off as aloof and, well, like the proverbial 'goody-two-shoes'. The guy is, or appears to be, very clean-cut. Non-controversial.

Call me crazy, but I tend to like a candidate more if they can show a little (or a lot of) emotion. The fact that Santorum got so frustrated with Zeleny that he cussed at him shows me that Santorum is a normal guy. He gets worked up about stuff. In an era when people increasingly put candidates on a pedestal, something like this humanizes him.

On Monday’s “On the Record with Greta Van Sustren,” former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin reacted to Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum referring to the premise of a question posed by New York Times reporter Jeff Zeleny as “bullshit.”
“Santorum’s response to that liberal leftist in-the-tank-for-Obama press character really revealed some of Rick Santorum’s character,” she said. “And it was good, and it was strong, and it was about time because he’s saying enough is enough of the liberal media twisting the conservative’s words, putting words in his mouth, taking things out of context and even just making things up.”

So, if you're keeping score at home, Santorum using the word "Bullshit," it:
A) Humanizes him
B) Shows his strong character
and
C) Is no big deal.

Vice-President Biden using the term "big fuckin' deal" is, ironically, a big fucking deal. It is potty-mouthery of such biblical proportion as to be more alarming than even Janet Jackson's nipple!

Vice President Cheney telling Senator Leahy to go "fuck himself" on the Senate floor? A charming piece of curmudgeonliness.

Theresa Heinz-Kerrey telling a reporter to "shove it," however, is a moral crisis the likes of which has not been seen since NYPD Blue showed David Caruso's doughy, amorphous buttocks on television.

Bush and Cheney referring to a reporter as a "major-league asshole?" Just keepin' it real!

This?

Youthful playfulness. Oh, Georgie, you're incorrigible! What a child-like love of life you have!

Dead Tigers

There's an old joke about a guy standing on his front lawn shouting and waving his arms. His neighbor asks him what he's doing, and he says "scaring away the tigers."
"There are no tigers in North America," says his neighbor. "see," says the man, "it's working!"

That's what I think of every time I hear one of the Bush administration apologists claiming that "They kept us safe for 7 years after 9/11."

I'm so sick of this bs being trotted out that it was torture, warrentless wiretapping, etc. that foiled various terrorist plots, but they just can't tell us about them. When you busted a half-dozen potheads in Florida who talked about maybe blowing up a building in Chicago,. you trumpeted that from the fucking hillsides. When you caught some knuckleheads allegedly planning to disguise themselves as pizza delivery guys and blow up Fort Dix, it was front page news. But the plots that were thwarted by your illegal methods, those are top fucking secret. "Gee, we're trying to get those files de-classified, then you'll see, blah, blah, blah. . ." You want me to believe that you prevented an attack? Show me a dead tiger.

I want to know what terrorist plot you foiled by waterboarding. Because you sure didn't get any information you could use to prevent our allies in Madrid from having their trains blown up.

And what information did you get from tapping phones without a warrant? Obviously, nothing about anyone planning suicide bombings in London.

And we still don't know who mailed anthrax to two US Senators.

So what did you prevent? What plot did you foil? Show us the dead tigers!

If you can't show us one credible threat that was thwarted by your illegal means, then shut the fuck up about keeping us safe.

No Tigers were harmed in the making of this blog post.

Michael Steele

As if he hasn't embarrassed himself enough lately, Mr Steele had this to say on the subject of global climate change:

“We are cooling. We are not warming. The warming you see out there, the supposed warming, and I am using my finger quotation marks here, is part of the cooling process. Greenland, which is now covered in ice, it was once called Greenland for a reason, right? Iceland, which is now green. Oh I love this. Like we know what this planet is all about. How long have we been here? How long? No very long.”

The warming is part of the cooling process? I'm sorry, did you bring enough stupid for the rest of the class?
Oh, and yes, there is a reason why Greenland is called Greenland.

Norse legends written in the 12th century and later, it is told that Eric the Red explored the southeast and southwest coasts of Greenland in A.D. 983-986 and gave the country its name because people would be more likely to go there if it had an attractive name.

Might want to do a quick Googling before making public statements.

But really, it's not just Mr Steele that's the problem here. For one thing, there's a pretty slim chance that he's actually this big a dullard. The thing is, he's so emblematic of the pernicious strain of anti-intellectualism that has infected our political process. It's this anti- knowledge, anti-science, anti-reason attitude that allows people to consider their "gut feeling" to be superior to actual expertise, that allows people to dismiss educated people as "elitist" or "out of touch." This pro-ignorance stance makes it easy for people to say things like "the jury's still out on global warming," assuming that the considered opinion of every legitimate climatologist in the world is no more authoritative than one's own observation that the last few days have been pretty cold.

That's how we end up with a fiasco like this:

Everyone knew that Al Gore was vastly more intelligent than George W. Bush, so why did so many people vote for W? For precisely that reason. Too many voters disliked Gore because he was smart. They liked Bush because he seemed like an ordinary, regular guy. Problem is, Bush actually is a regular guy. And a regular guy is not qualified to be the leader of the free world. An electorate with any sense would want to vote for an extraordinary person to be president. The previous 8 disastrous years should have served as an object lesson in "why being an amiable, slow-witted dunce is not sufficient qualification to be president," but no. Way too many of the same people have steadfastly refused to learn any lesson from the recent past, which is why we may end up, (God Forbid) with this:
