With Friends Like These, Who Needs Enemies?

Democrats may stand in Obama's way on gun measures

Of course, they will. Of course.

All eyes are on these dozen or so Democrats, some of whom face re-election in 2014. That includes Sens. Max Baucus of Montana, Mark Begich of Alaska and Mark Pryor of Arkansas.

Of course it's Baucus. Of course it is.

Somebody better primary that piece of shit blue-dog coward.
Anyone who places more importance on his re-election than on maybe saving some innocent lives does not deserve another term. Anyone who doesn't support gun-control measures had damn well better get primaried, whether their opposition stems from electoral cowardice or from a sincere love of guns.

What the hell is the point of getting elected if you're not going to do at least this simple, obvious right thing.

The political concerns of Democrats create problems for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who has his own history with the NRA.

The powerful gun lobby endorsed him in previous elections, but stayed neutral in his most recent race, in 2010. Even before Obama announced the gun proposals this month, Reid told a Nevada PBS station that an assault weapons ban would have a hard time getting through Congress. That comment irked Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., author of such a ban.

Is anyone not sick to death of Harry Reid?

How the fuck did this guy ever get to be in charge?
He should have been bounced out of his leadership position when he rolled over during the health-care debate. Republicans whined that they needed time to go back and consult with their constituencies before voting and Reid seriously couldn't see through this? Seemingly, he really thought that they were going to go back to their constituents and listen to their input and then come back saying "well, the voters seem to like this idea, so I guess I'll vote yes!" Maybe he couldn't have foreseen the Republicans bussing in groups of Cro-Magnon morons to scream about death panels and tyranny and wanting their country back, but he had to know they were up to no good. At best, this was a stalling tactic. But Reid walked right into their little trap as if he had never met these assholes and thought they would bargain in good faith.

Oh, and great job with filibuster reform, Senator Reid!

I can't believe anyone in the House or Senate is still afraid of the NRA. You know they don't even represent their own membership, right? Most NRA members want universal background checks.

Have you seen the polling? (LINK)

Q: Please tell me what kind of priority you think Obama and the Congress should give addressing gun violence? (Asked of half sample)

The highest priority     28%
High priority but not the highest    40%
Lower priority            30%
(VOL) No priority     1%

That's 68% of those surveyed who think that adressing gun violence is a high priority.

Q: Would you support or oppose a law requiring a nationwide ban on high-capacity ammunition clips, meaning those containing more than 10 bullets?

Support   65%

Q: Would you support or oppose a law requiring background checks on people buying guns at gun shows?

 Support   88%

EIGHTY-EIGHT PERCENT! Eighty-eight percent support closing the gun-show loophole, but a handful of cowardly senators could prevent this.

71% support the creation of a federal database to track gun sales.  But because the Wayne LaPierres of this country will scream "tyranny!" we probably won't even get that.

58% support a total ban on assault weapons. But Harry Reid, that sniveling weakling, doesn't think he can get that through his caucus.

There is some hope, though. People are starting to get active.

Thousands rally in Washington for gun control

WASHINGTON — In the wake of several recent mass shootings, thousands of people gathered Saturday in front of the Capitol for a silent march urging Congress to act on legislation to control guns. Despite chilly temperatures and snow-covered ground, supporters came from around the country came to make their statement.

At some point, even the cowards in the Senate might have to come to the realization that, despite what the maniacs of the NRA leadership say, America wants and needs sensible gun laws.

Mike Enzi has got Some Freakin' Balls!

When I first saw a headline with his name in it, I thought "Who the fuck is Mike Enzi?"

Well, as it turns out, he is one of three Republican senators working on bipartisan health-care legislation. So why is he suddenly so important?

Well, according to Bloomberg:

[Enzi] said he won’t agree to a plan before the Senate adjourns next week, setting back the measure’s progress even as it advanced in the House.

“The bill is not ready for prime time, so I don’t know of any way it can be completed today or next week or before the August break,” Senator Mike Enzi, a Wyoming Republican and member of the finance committee, told reporters after leaving a meeting of Republicans. “There’s a train wreck that’s going to happen” if Democrats keep pushing for faster results," he said.

Now that takes some balls, being in the minority party, to think you're going to dictate the timeline for legislation being pushed by the majority. But wait, it gets better!
This is from the senator's own web page:

“I will need to see complete language and a final estimate from the Congressional Budget Office before I can agree to any health care reform bill,” said Enzi

How is this little putz in any position to be making demands?

“I also need commitments from Senator Reid and Speaker Pelosi, as well as the Administration, that the bipartisan agreements reached in the Finance Committee will survive in a final bill that goes to the President.”

So not only are you going to try to dictate terms to the Senate majority leader, you're also going to strong-arm the speaker of the House and the Frickin' President? Where do you get the balls?
No way is the majiority leader going to let you push. . .oh, wait. It's Harry Reid. Yeah, you'll probably get everything you want. Never mind.

Would someone please explain to Harry Reid that he has the majority? He doesn't have to give the Republicans ANYTHING. It's nice to try and be "bi-partisan" and all, but I don't think Harry Reid has any idea what that means. Someone Please explain to him that bi-partisan means you have the other side in the room, listen to their suggestions, and if any of them seem good, you can even adopt one or two, but you don't just give them everything! Were you guys in the minority so long that you just roll over on everything out of force of habit?

Now I'm hearing that there may not even be a public option in the final bill. What a disgrace! Health care is one of the reasons the American electorate chose to put Democrats in the majority. So now we won't even get that? At least when republicans were running everything we had some hope of "someday, the other guys will win and they'll make things better." Now we don't even have that. Would someone please talk to Harry Reid? I can't talk to the guy. I can't even stand to look at him.

This is Never Going To Happen, Is It?

Goddammit, Harry Reid, see this is why people hate you.

Reid bends on healthcare deadline

@ 12:45 pm by Hill Staff

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is bending on the pre-recess deadline for a health reform bill.

"The Republicans have asked for more time, and I don't think it's unreasonable," Reid said at a noon press conference.

You're Pathetic!

You must know that no matter how accommodating you are to the righties, they will still portray you like this:

While actually seeing you like this:

And you know what, they've got a point, you miserable little weiner.

Why don't you start acting like you lead the majority party and give us a fucking health care plan! You have a filibuster-proof majority and you still feel the need to kiss Republican ass at every turn, hoping that the redneck yahoos of Nevada won't be tto mad at you and you might get re-elected. well guess what? There's no point in getting elected if you're not going to do anything when you're in charge. Let someone else be the majority leader if you can't handle the pressure.

Hey Harry, Guess What?

Harry Reid

With friends like Harry, who needs enemies?

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid declared in press conference today that he will not support GITMO detainees being held in the United States. Reid said that he supports Obama’s plan to close GITMO, but will not support, “terrorists to be released in the United States.”

Jeez, Harry! Come on! No one is talking about releasing terrorists anywhere, let alone releasing them into the U.S. You gotta stop watching FOX! Do you really think that President Obama would just let terrorists loose to wander the streets of America? How do you explain this position of yours?

Reid was asked why the Senate wouldn’t fund the closure of GITMO
He said,“I agree with President Bush.

Oh Good God Almighty! It's worse than I thought! You agree with Bush? The man who was wrong about, um, everything?

“I agree with President Bush. I agree with John McCain. I agree with Barack Obama.

Yeah, that doesn't really work. That's like saying "I'm a devout Baptist. And also a Hindu. And a Mormon." Oh, right. You are a Mormon, aren't you? What does that church do to its followers' minds?

Reid noted, however, that “many Americans have concerns about terrorists coming into our community.”

Yeah, unless your community is a Supermax prison, that's not really going to be an issue.

Oh, check out this exchange:
REID: I’m saying that the United States Senate, Democrats and Republicans, do not want terrorists to be released in the United States.

QUESTION: No one’s talking about releasing them. We’re talking about putting them in prison somewhere in the United States.

REID: Can’t put them in prison unless you release them.

What? Do you have any idea how prison transfers work? It's not like when your company transfers you to a different branch. They don't just tell you when to show up and who to ask for.

This is how they transport a garden variety criminal.

Not even a high-priority offender. So, yeah, I think that the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security could handle transferring prisoners into US prisons.

U.S. Prisons can handle guys like this

You think they can't handle these guys?

Hey Reid, guess what?
