The Fault, dear Brutus. . .

Let's find fault.
Not because it's fun, or because it makes us feel good (which it might) but because if we don't identify whose fault this is, we're never going to be able to prevent a disaster like this from happening again.

http://edumovlive.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/the-blame-game-pointing-fingers.jpg

(It is one of my basic rules of life that the easiest way to identify the person to blame is to look for the person who says that we shouldn't play the blame game.)

So whose fault is it that Donald Trump is now the president-elect of the United States of America?

Really, there are so many people to blame.
There's the media for treating Donald Trump as if he were a legitimate candidate who was "outspoken" and "controversial" instead of a wildly unqualified, emotionally unstable racist misogynist authoritarian - all while obsessing over e-mails.
Of course there's James Comey.
And Julian Assange.

And, sure, we can blame racism and sexism and xenophobia, but these we have always had with us, and we've elected decent candidates before.

I think that no matter what they're saying. . .

Clinton aides blame FBI director, media for devastating loss

. . .  the blame for losing this election falls most squarely on Hillary Clinton herself and the Democratic Party establishment.

http://13458-presscdn-0-97.pagely.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/donna-brazile-debbie-wasserman-schultz.jpg

This was not a huge groundswell of support for Donald Trump. He got a million fewer votes than John McCain got in 2008. And two million fewer than Mitt Romney in 2012. This election should have been a cakewalk for the Democrats, but they decided to trot out pretty much the only candidate capable of losing to this buffoon, Hillary Clinton.
Yes, Hillary Clinton is eminently qualified. Yes, she's smart as hell and can speak intelligently and knowledgeably on any pretty much any relevant issue. But she has no idea how to win a national campaign.
And the Democratic Party has still, inexplicably, not learned the one simple lesson that when they nominate a candidate with charisma (Bill Clinton, Barack Obama) they win. When they nominate uncharismatic candidates (Mike Dukakis, Al Gore, John Kerry) they lose. It really is that simple. It shouldn't be, but it is. And it has been since at least Kennedy vs Nixon. And Hillary just doesn't have it. She may be a wonderful, charming bon vivant in person, I have no idea, but on a campaign stage, she just doesn't have "it." Bill has "it." He has it in spades.

 https://maxcdn1.laprogressive.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/bill-thumbs-up-720.jpg

But she doesn't.

 http://media1.s-nbcnews.com/j/msnbc/components/video/__new/tdy_mitchell_clinton_160301.nbcnews-ux-1080-600.jpg
And you can't fake it, you can't learn it, you have to be born with it.

You know who does have "it?" Donald trump. Personally, I could never stand him. I hated him when he was just a second-rate game show host, but millions of people loved him even then. Because there is a huge segment of the population that loves a bully. Simon Cowell, Gordon Ramsey, the lady on Dance Moms, reality TV is full of them.

 https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/f8/33/f2/f833f2edf6831f8f7e33f6cfb2e208fb.jpg

People, for whatever reason, love to see a vulnerable person have their dreams shattered by a loudmouth who shouts insults at them.

http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/2f/4e/d3/2f4ed377deab15490629984cc9cbf48e.jpg

Or makes catty remarks behind their backs.

So millions of people used to tune in to watch him tell some hopeful business-school grad (or washed-up D-list celebrity) "You're Fired!" They used to sell t-shirts with "You're Fired" printed on them, because that was the viewer's favorite part.

But I digress. This isn't about Donal;d Trump. It's about Hillary Clinton and the DNC.

The reason she lost is not, as mentioned previously, because of some huge number of votes for Trump. She lost because she got around six million fewer votes than Barack Obama got in 2012. And yes, she still got more actual votes than Donald Trump, so some blame has to go to the Founding Fathers and their idea for an electoral college which was, ironically, created specifically to prevent a dangerous populist ideologue from becoming President.

And, yes, there was voter suppression. But Greg Palast, one of the top experts on the subject, estimates 1.1 million voters "purged" from the rolls, and it's not like Republicans haven't used similar techniques in previous elections.
So why did HRC get so many fewer votes? Who's to blame for this?

Well, obviously Hillary herself bears a huge part of the blame. She's always been politically tone-deaf, but her failure to even make any attempt to court Bernie Sanders' voters was just astonishingly bad politics. Knowing that the Bernie voters (and I was one)  despised Debbie Wasserman Schultz, why in the world would Hillary hire her the day she was fired as DNC chair? I get that she owed DWS a favor, but that sort of favor could easily have been re-paid after the election. Hiring Schultz seemed like an intentional middle finger to the Berniecrats, the voters who are also known as the Democratic Party Base.

And it wasn't just hiring DWS. We had a post-convention meeting of Bernie people  here in Atlanta and we heard from Bernie delegates, some who were in tears, talk about how they were shouted down at the convention, how the Clinton team passed out I'm with Her signs to block Sanders supporters from being seen by TV cameras, how completely disrespected and insulted they all felt by the treatment they received. These were the people she should have been courting. And instead she, the campaign, and the Democratic Party establishment went out of their way to alienate them.

She could have chosen a progressive firebrand as her running mate. I doubt Bernie would have done it, but maybe Elizabeth Warren, or Sherrod Brown, or Alan Grayson. But no, she chose the poster boy for the bland, corporate centrism that has been killing the party for decades, Tim Kaine.

http://a57.foxnews.com/media2.foxnews.com/BrightCove/694940094001/2016/10/04/780/438/694940094001_5156226527001_Insult-driven-campaigns-Pence--Kaine-on-tone-of-2016-race.jpg
Can you even tell the difference?

And she still should have won! Because Donald Trump was a uniquely awful candidate for president. A juvenile, thin-skinned, racist, misogynist con man with more bankruptcies than ex-wives, he somehow managed to bumble his way through the Republican primary with an even lower approval rating than Hillary, seemingly handing the Presidency to the Democrats wrapped in a bow.

So why did she get so few voters to show up?

Well, the media is one obvious target for blame.  Besides giving Trump unlimited free airtime whenever he felt like picking up a phone, they fawned over him like starstruck teens.

#Trump

This is a picture I snapped in a restaurant on the night before the election. This is CNN, or as right-wingers and lefty Hillary-haters call it, the "Clinton News Network," They're covering, not just a Trump rally, but the "WAITING FOR A TRUMP RALLY."  I remember early on in the primaries, seeing CNN on at a different restaurant, and they were covering a Trump rally in Alabama that hadn't even begun yet, and  they were broadcasting live, getting all excited about seeing his plane approaching like he was the Beatles landing at LaGuardia.

http://cdn.history.com/sites/2/2015/04/HITH-Beatlemania-Sweeps-US-Getty106494137-E.jpeg

Meanwhile, they breathlessly reported on every pseudo-scandal the right could dream up about Hillary, from Benghazi to e-mail servers to some sort of cover-up about her health until a large percentage of America started to figure that if there was this much smoke, there must be some fire.

(If you're not familiar with the "Clinton Rules," take a couple of minutes to read this http://www.vox.com/2015/7/6/8900143/hillary-clinton-reporting-rules)

And they dutifully stood in their pens at his rallies while he riled up crowds to boo and jeer them and went back to their newsrooms and said that Trump was "outspoken." and "unconventional."

Also, I blame the #BernieorBust and #JillNotHill crowd. Not because Jill Steyn took enough votes from Clinton to swing the election, she didn't. But because these people spent the last year on social media insisting that Hillary Clinton was every bit as bad as Donald Trump, which dovetailed perfectly with the media narrative that Trump was just as legitimate a candidate as Hillary. How many people did they convince that it didn't matter which candidate won since they were both equally evil and corrupt an whatnot? How many potential "hold your nose and vote for Hillary" voters stayed home or wrote in Bernie sanders or someone else who wasn't even running anymore? How many votes against a Trump regime did we lose because these folks persisted in this myth that both parties are the same so instead of voting for the lesser of two evils, you should "vote your conscience" and "send a message" with some sort of futile protest vote?

Look, I would love it if we had a third party. I'd love it if we had a bunch of parties. But we don't. And no good comes from tossing your vote to a party that not only has no chance to win now, but has no plan to be viable anytime in the foreseeable future. Jill Steyn and the Green party don't seem to have any idea what they're doing. Since Ralph Nader brought them to the national consciousness in 1996, they should have been building from the bottom up. They should have put their time effort and resources into electing some candidates on to city councils, then maybe a mayor, a Congressman, etc. By now, maybe you'd have a presidential candidate with a resume' and name recognition, instead of every four years trotting out some nobody with zero qualifications who thinks that POTUS is an entry-level position. then complaining that you're not taken seriously.

Look, when I was still in California, we had a Green Party member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Matt Gonzales, who narrowly lost the race for mayor to Gavin Newsom.  This was the sort of candidate they should have gotten behind. He could have run for state assembly and maybe won with some resources behind him. From there, it's not an unimaginable leap to Congress. Or maybe Governor. But nooooo. . . .

https://media.giphy.com/media/ehId2xED1LL8s/giphy.gif

No, instead his next campaign was as Ralph Nader's running mate in 2008, and he now works as a lawyer.  This is why we can't have viable third parties, they don't have the patience to build slowly.

But too many people wanted us to vote for Steyn, who has no qualifications and has never held public office, because Hillary was "just as bad" as Trump.

You want to hear the logic of the #NeverHillary crowd? Listen to Jimmy Dore try to convince Sam Seder that a Donald trump presidency would be preferable to a Hillary Clinton administration.

And Jimmy Dore has an audience. He has a radio show, and he's on the Young Turks. How many people listened to Jimmy Dore and decided not to vote for Hillary?

Look, I'm no fan of Hillary Clinton. She's way too cozy with Wall Street and the big banks, she's lousy on the environment, and you can't get a straight answer out of her as to whether she supports or opposes anything until she's read all the polls and held a few focus groups, but who the hell cares? The alternative was Donald Trump. And this administration is going to fuck up this country for a generation at least.
How many Supreme Court vacancies is he going to get to fill? One is too many, but it could easily be three or four. And he may not care one way or the other about social issues, but the right-wing congress and Senate do, and when they send legislation to his desk repealing the ACA or making a federal "fetal personhood" law, or a national "traditional marriage" law, he'll have no reason not to sign them. Anyone he knocks up, he'll have no problem flying off to Switzerland for an abortion. He'll always have health insurance, ACA or no ACA. And when a National "right to work" law shows up on his desk, he'll get cartoon dollar signs in his eyes as he struggles to find a pen his tiny hands can grip long enough to scrawl his signature on it.

Fuck You, 2016! Now Leonard Cohen?

2016 just won't stop kicking us in the balls.
Now it's taken the great Leonard Cohen.

He ascended to the Tower of Song in the shy last night at the age of 82. He was writing and recording up to the end.

Remember the short-lived NBC show "Night Music?" This was one of the great performances that you could only see on that show with Leonard Cohen, Sonny Rollins and Was Not Was

I'm still trying to process what happened Tuesday. It still feels so surreal. I can't really address the subject right now. Maybe tomorrow. Meanwhile, at least music still exists.

Election Detritus

Just a few random things that slipped through the cracks this election year, so that we may never again speak of this election.

1. I think my favorite part of the whole Wikileaks e-mail hack-dump is how quickly it went McMartin PreSchool on us. It was a pretty short leap from "Hillary is a crooked machine politician who engages in some shady machinations" to "Hillary is part of a Satan-worshipping cult of pedophiles." And if you think I'm being sarcastic, just go to the Twitter and search for #SpiritCooking. You will NOT be disappointed.

http://truthfeed.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/spirit-cooking-01-800x416.jpg

2. Ted Nugent.

We discussed earlier the fact that Ted Nugent is, as much as anyone, the current face of the Republican party.

And of course, he played a role in this odious election cycle.

Ted Nugent speaks at Trump's Final Rally

I mean, it's not surprising. Even the relatively dignified patrician Mitt Romney sought and received the endorsement of this vile racist gun-humper. Of course, the crude, loud-mouthed pig Donald Trump would want his backing. The only thing that makes it interesting is this:

Trump hits Clinton over Jay Z's profanity at concert

Updated 5:08 PM ET, Sat November 5, 2016
Yeah, it's really just shocking that Hillary would associate herself with a guy who says four-letter word on stage.

And, of course, he doesn't see the irony.

Neither did Mrs Trump when she made this speech:

Melania Trump: Ending social media bullying would be focus as first lady

Updated 8:43 AM ET, Fri November 4, 2016

Melania Trump says she'd work to improve a social media culture that has gotten "too mean and too tough" -- riddled with insults based on "looks and intelligence" -- if she becomes first lady.

http://reactiongifs.me/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/jon-stewart-confused-what.gif

Step one, I will take my husband's phone away from him.

I mean for fuck sake, she might as well have said she would campaign against real estate development, or work for stricter bankruptcy laws or oppose bizarrely orange skin and bad combovers.

3. Tony Perkins channeled Jonathon Edwards

Tony Perkins: ‘Our Nation Is Hanging By A Thread Over A Raging Fire’ And Only Trump Will Let Christians Save It

http://gifrific.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Tom-Hanks-Saying-Really.gif

In a conference call for Ohio pastors organized by Citizens for Community Values today, Family Research Council president Tony Perkins urged listeners to rally their congregations to support Donald Trump in the presidential election, warning that if Hillary Clinton becomes president, the nation will become a “very, very hostile environment” for Christians.

Yeah, yeah, and she's going to take away all your guns and put you in FEMA camps and blah blah blah. . . you really need to work on some new material.

Perkins, who boasted that he “wrote a large portion” of the Republican Party’s platform at the GOP convention in Cleveland this year, said that Trump’s campaign was the only Republican presidential campaign in the past 12 years not to put up a fight as he attempted to insert his hardline anti-LGBT and anti-abortion-rights stances into the party platform.

Yeah. Because he DOESN'T CARE! You can put whatever you want in the platform, he doesn't care about policy, doesn't understand policy, has no time for policy. He's gonna be too busy making America great again! According to one of his douchebag sons, he plans to delegate both foreign and domestic policy to his vice president so that he can focus on this insipid, puerile fantasy of re-making America in his gold-plated, tacky-as-fuck image of what he thinks greatness looks like.

Honest to God, if Trump is the only thing that's going to save us from this fire, I say bring on the flames and hand me a marshmallow. Because I'm pretty sure that what Tony Perkins considers plunging into hellfire is what the rest of call having an enjoyable life.

4. The right is really really obsessed with Huma Abedin.

http://static2.politico.com/dims4/default/19b4f5f/2147483647/resize/1160x%3E/quality/90/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fs3-origin-images.politico.com%2F2013%2F07%2F30%2Fhuma_hillary_7_ap_605.jpg

Augh! Just look! She has the ear of Hillary Clinton while simultaneously having a scary Muslimy-sounding name and swarthy skin! She's just got to be up to no good somehow, right?

https://thenypost.files.wordpress.com/2016/08/2016_metropolitan_museum_of_art_costume_institute_benefit_gala.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&strip=all
Two sure signs of a radical Muslim extremist: wearing sleeveless dresses and marrying a Jew!

And I'm not going to even bother rehashing James Comey's ridiculous "oh we found e-mails on Huma's computa" bullshit stunt. But I did think this was funny (via MPS):

When I was a little boy, frequently I would watch “Laurel and Hardy” on television with my younger sister. The mantra of the old time comedy show was, “A fine fix you have gotten us into now, Ollie,” as the two comedy characters would blunder into one “fix” after another.

Okay, first of all, It was Ollie who would say this to Stan. And the line was "another fine mess you've gotten me into." Also, don't begin a screed by referencing Laurel and Hardy unless your screed is about the current dearth  of slapstick comedy in American movies or something. If you're writing about current events and politics and you want to be taken seriously. . . never mind, you could never be taken seriously.

The mantra of the old time comedy show was, “A fine fix you have gotten us into now, Ollie,” as the two comedy characters would blunder into one “fix” after another.
Well, the same can now be said for Hillary Clinton, the Wicked Witch of the Left, and her heretofore live-in girlfriend, Huma Abedin.

Live-in girlfriend? You know they don't even live in the same. . . you know they're both married, right? To men? What could possibly lead you to believe that there was any kind of sexual relationship between these two married, heterosexual women?

http://theduran.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/clinton-epstein.jpg
Woah, hey! Let's not rule anything out!

The recent revelations of last Friday come as no surprise – that there are tens of thousands of unread, relevant Huma Abedin emails concerning her work, if not dalliances, with Hillary Clinton on a laptop computer jointly owned by Abedin and her now-estranged perverted husband, former Rep. Anthony Weiner.

You know, e-mails don't stay on your computer. I can go into the library, use one of their computers and read my e-mails. You don't actually "find" e-mails on a computer. Also, any e-mails between Clinton and Abedin would have already been "found" on Clinon's e-mail account.

While it remains extremely unlikely that Hillary will ever be indicted by either a Democrat or Republican Justice Department – as the establishments of both parties protect each other’s so-called elites – Huma is likely to be sold down the Nile by the Wicked Witch and her influential corrupt friends. By sharing a laptop computer with her now-spurned Weiner, Huma probably illegally gave him access to classified national security documentation and information, notwithstanding her own breach of national security protocol and criminal laws. Thus, expect the Palestinian to eventually be wearing pink prison garb – and not in the Arizona Maricopa County jail of Sheriff Joe Arpaio but in a federal penitentiary.

Sure, I jave no evidence of any wrongdoing on Abedin's part. Or Secretary Clinton's part. Or any real reason to think that there is any evidence hidden somewhere. And sure she has already been exonerated by the conservative Republican James Comey who really seems to hate her, but I think it's safe to assume that Anthony Weiner was given classified information and texted it to teenage girls along with pictures of his dick. I mean, can you you prove he didn't?

The Wicked Witch and her entourage have never been known for their loyalty. Just ask Vince Foster, Hillary’s last male lover, before she went to the other side.

Right. Because Foster was totally murdered and the D.C. police just can't tell the difference between a suicide and a dump job, not surprising considering how little experience they have investigating violent crimes. Oh, and also, he was a person associated with Hillary Clinton, so we have to assume she was fucking him.

https://www.wikitree.com/photo.php/4/4f/Foster-7496.png

I mean, come on! Could you resist?
Oh, and then at some point, Hillary flipped the sexuality switch to become a lesbian. That's how it works for women, right? I've never actually met one, but I' have seen movies. So many movies. . .

http://files.ctctcdn.com/cfa60496001/ca00a45f-02f1-4812-a7fd-eb0bf6efd7b8.jpg

5. This happened.

I don't like Brian Williams. I think he's the living embodiment of the sorry state of network journalism, cozy with political figures, glib, more of an entertainer than an informer. But this is one beautifully passive-aggressive slap of Mark Halperin.

6. This also happened

Donald Trump Tells Veterans He's 'Financially Brave'

https://cdn.pastemagazine.com/www/system/images/photo_albums/archer-memes-/large/archer-meme-5.jpg?1384968217https://media.giphy.com/media/b4pPnoO1QDd1C/giphy.gif

The Republican presidential candidate was listing the Medal of Honor recipients at the rally, when he stopped and said, "Oh, they're so much more brave than me. I wouldn't have done what they did."

Okay. Wow. that's the most honest thing I have ever heard Trump say. And it's almost self-deprecating. Or at least not self-aggrandizing. Maybe his handlers have finally gotten him to act like a goddamm human being!

https://m.popkey.co/4878ee/ZWAaO.gif

I know, I was just kidding.

"I'm brave in other ways," he said at the rally in Selma, a town 45 miles southeast of Raleigh. "I'm brave -- I'm financially brave. Big deal, right? These are real brave."

It's almost as if he said something positive about people who are not him and some little voice in his head said "don't forget, Donald, you're brave too!" The way he phrases his follow up "I'm financially brave, big deal." It's like he's responding to someone who is trying to cheer him up. It's like a little kid says "gosh, I wish I was big and strong and brave like these soldiers," and his mommy says "oh, little Donnie, you're very big and strong for your age. And you're very brave. Remeber thise financial things you did?" And the kid goes "financially brave. So what? No one thinks I'm brave enough to be a soldier!" And I assume the conversation in his head goes on until the little voice has once again convinced him that he is the best  little boy in the whole wide world and these soldiers probably envy HIS courage!

7. Mike "the two-bit Elmer Gantry" Huckabee set a new record for the stupidest tweet of all time:

So, Hillary is driving very dangerously, but she could actually pull through without any harm. Trump has already wrapped his car around a pole, so that is a selling point for Trump?

8. Alabama may have the worst election official ever (at least since Ken Blackwell)

Alabama elections chief says automatic registration would ‘cheapen’ civil rights leaders’ work

Five states have approved plans to allow all eligible citizens to automatically be registered to vote, unless they opt-out, and dozens more are considering following suit.
But Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill (R) opposes such a practice, calling it the “sorry and lazy way out.”
“I don’t think that just because your birthday comes around, you should be registered to vote,” he said in an interview with Brian Jenkins, the director of a documentary about America’s various barriers to ballot access.
To explain his opposition, Merrill cited the efforts of civil rights leaders like Congressman John Lewis (D-GA), Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Rosa Parks, and other black leaders like Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL).
“These people fought — some of them were beaten, some of them were killed — because of their desire to ensure that everybody that wanted to had the right to register to vote and participate in the process,” he said.
“I’m not going to cheapen the work they did, I’m not going to embarrass them by allowing somebody that’s too sorry to get up off their rear end to go register to vote… because they think they deserve the right because they’ve turned 18,” he continued, growing angry.

You know John Lewis is still alive. So is Terri Sewell. They're probably both on social media. You could just ask them. Ask them if it would be a validation of their sacrifice for you to make it more difficult for people to vote.
Ask John Lewis (My Congressman!) if, when he was being beaten by racist pig cops on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, he was thinking "Man, I hope no one ever makes it easy for people to exercise their right to vote!" And have a handkerchief ready in case he spits in your stupid ugly racist face. Which he wouldn't do because he is a better man then I.

And, in a close second:

A City Clerk Opposed an Early-Voting Site at UW–Green Bay Because ‘Students Lean More Toward the Democrats’

9. The KKK, which, like every other white racist organization in America, has endorsed Donald Trump (and yet, the race is close. What a country!) sent out this flyer.

KKK for Trump Bad Signs

Which is funny only because I'm pretty sure that the Klan isn't all that crazy about Poles either.

10. Super-dumb Senator Ron Johnson may be getting a little ahead of himself:

Ron Johnson Says Hillary Clinton Should Be Impeached

https://media0.giphy.com/media/pmMn3EaUfrHjy/200_s.gif

You have to wait for her to be elected. Then you have to wait for her to take office. Then you have to wait for her to do a thing. A thing that is illegal or that you can pretend is illegal (see: Clinton, Bill).

WASHINGTON ― Embattled Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) told a local Wisconsin paper on Monday that, if Hillary Clinton is elected, she should be impeached.
“I would say yes, high crime or misdemeanor, I believe she is in violation of both laws,” Johnson told the Beloit Daily News in an interview published Tuesday.

Oh fer. . . "high crime" is not a law. "misdemeanor" is not a law. She can not possibly be in violation of both these "laws" since they are not laws. They are classifications of crimes. They differentiate the seriousness of various crimes. You can not be in violation of "high crime." That's not how it works.

https://media.giphy.com/media/ToMjGptNaPYXHQ0GuNW/giphy.gif

So, anyway, hopefully this will be the last we shall ever speak of this election. But you and I both know it won't be.
Everybody, if you haven't voted yet, go vote. VOTE! If for no other reason than that the GOP doesn't want you to.
And be careful in the upcoming days. Trump has already primed his supporters to believe that unless he was to somehow (God forbid, knock on wood) win this election that the results will be illegitimate. And if these already rage-addicted knuckle-draggers are convinced that they've been cheated and their country has been further stolen from them (first a black, now a woman!) these heavily-armed troglodytes could very well turn violent. I feel fairly confident that most of them are all talk and no action, but there are always a few like these:

Chomp and Stomp

I'm going to try and post a few videos from this weekend's Chomp and Stomp bluegrass festival and chili cookoff.

am from there
I don't think it's working. I'll try uploading them to YouTube and then I can post them from there.
