The Boston Herald Has a Thing for the Romneys

With Scott Brown deciding not to embarrass himself in another Senate race, Massachusetts Republicans are scrambling to find another candidate. Fortunately, the Boston Herald has an idea.

With Brown out, GOP mulls Romney energy

Romney energy? Romney energy? This may be the first time those two words have ever been used in the same sentence.

Woah, dial it down a notch, there!

Massachusetts Republicans are desperately scrambling to find a strong Senate candidate to replace Scott Brown, with some even trying to persuade Mitt Romney’s wife or son to jump into the race to avert another electoral disaster.

Because as we all know, Massachusetts voters just looooove the Romneys

“I’ve had several people call me and ask about Ann Romney,” Ron Kaufman, a longtime friend and aide to the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 presidential candidate nominee, told the Herald.

Ann Romney? This Ann Romney?

The Ann Romney who says things like this?

Doesn't pretty much everyone hate her?

Ann Romney’s inspiring battle against multiple sclerosis and her star turn on the GOP convention stage turned her into a popular national figure, especially among women voters in Massachusetts.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's not true. I'm pretty sure women in Massachusetts aren't any different from women in any other state and they probably don't really like  haughty, imperious horse dancers looking down their noses at them any more than anyone else. Ann Romney is Lucille Bluth without the wit. She's the Dowager Countess without the charm.

But, sadly for late-night comedians and smart-alecky bloggers, Lady Ann of Romnington has not deigned to run for Senate.  But the Boston Herald has another great idea!

Tagg, you’re it for GOP Senate hopes

Seriously! Now they want Tagg! Tagg, the man with two expressions:

Christian Bale in American Psycho

and

student who has just been asked the square root of Pi.

Calls for Romney, 42, to join in the short campaign to replace Secretary of State John F. Kerry have increased since the Herald first reported heavyweight Republicans are urging both Romney and his mother, Ann, to get in. The eldest son of former governor and presidential candidate Mitt Romney already has statewide name recognition

Oh, well, statewide name recognition. You know who else has a lot of statewide name recognition?
Albert deSalvo.

I think name recognition might actually be a liability in this case. People hear the name Tagg Romney and they go "oh, isn't that the completely unqualified twit who said he wanted to punch the President?" If they didn't recognize the name, they might at least be inclined to hear him out.

The father of six was a regular on the campaign trail in both of his father’s failed races for president in 2008 and 2012, which would give him some political know-how while working to win over Bay State voters. But the younger Romney is weighing joining the fray against remaining with his successful venture capital firm, Solamere.

Because people love venture capitalists!
I have to assume that the Boston Herald is one of Rupert Murdoch's rags. Let me do a quick image search. . .

 Yep, that's a Murdoch rag!

So, Yeah, Paul Ryan is Exactly the Douchey Little Frat-Boy You Thought He Was.

From Time Magazine's Lightbox:

Paul Ryan: All Pumped Up for His Closeup

When TIME named Paul Ryan a runner-up in the 2011 Person of the Year issue,
[What the fuck? Was it that pathetic a year?]
many were familiar with his proposed budget, but few knew that the Wisconsin Congressman stayed fit with the now best-selling P90X workout plan.

Also, no one gave a good goddamn. No one looked at Ryan's ridiculous budget plans and thought "how does that moron stay so darn trim?"

(Ryan’s father and grandfather both died of a heart attack.)

That is one hell of a heart attack, to kill two men with one attack!

In fact, it was Ryan’s fitness regime — and Herculean strength on all things fiscal — that inspired this workout-themed sitting for Person of the Year.

Herculean strength on all things fiscal? If by Herculean you mean idiotic and by strength you mean also idiotic, then sure. He has Herculean fiscal strength. Nice objectivity, by the way, Time Magazine. Did a 13-year-old fangirl write this? Damn liberal media!

This looks exactly like the college-aged tools that used to try to buy beer from me when I worked in a convenience store, the guys who called me "brah," and would ask me 'sup?
This is really, really not a congressional look. This is not the look of a serious person. It is certainly not the look of a person with "Herculean strength" either in fiscal or physical matters.

Seriously, Paul Ryan, if you're going to pose with weights like this:

You really ought to have a physique like this:

Or this:

Or, dare I say, this:

If you're going to invite us all to the gun show, there really ought to be some guns. Just sayin'.

Pathetic line of the Day

From a CNN Documentary entitled "Romney Revealed"

In 1968, France was a dangerous place to be for a 21yo American but Romney was right in the middle of it
France. In 1968. France was a dangerous place for a 21-year-old American boy? You know, if France was too dangerous for him, he could maybe have tried some other country like, Oh, I don't know, Vietnam?

It's not like anyone was forcing poor old Mitt to be in France, he was there because he was classifying himself as a missionary to avoid going to Vietnam. But I'm sure he must have had serious moral objections to serving in the war, probably.

http://www.addictinginfo.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/article-2083002-0F5B49EB00000578-536_634x495.jpg

Oh, right!

So what was so horrible about France in the 1960's?

. . . a time that Romney once described as “tough” because the French were “not happy to see Americans, because we were in Vietnam at the time.”

Yeah, I got news for ya, Mittens, no one in any country is ever happy to see Mormons knocking at their door.

Oh, God, here they come. Quiet everyone, kill the lights!
. . . all those dying Americans were causing protests in France, and as a result, says Romney's fellow missionary Mike Bush, “There was no train service, there were no buses, no newspapers. The electricity would go off from time-to-time.”

Oh. That must have been rough!

“There were no letters from home,” Bush continues. “The money at the time came via check. That was our lifeline was getting letters from home.”

Seriously? You're telling me that George Romney, head of American Motors and governor of Michigan didn't know how to wire money to France?  I'm sure Mitt could've taught him how to wire it to Switzerland. Or the Caymans. Or Bermuda.

Damn, CNN! You're really airing this nonsense? You do know that how ever far you bend over backwards to accommodate the right, they are never going to be your friends, right? Even if you go to these pathetic lengths, portraying a man who supported the war as long as someone else was fighting it as somehow heroic because there were protests and marches in France? You know where else there were protests and marches in 1968? EVERYWHERE! Certainly all over the US. This is what 1968 looked like in Chicago:

The 1968 Chicago Democratic National Convention

In San Francisco:

In Detroit:

Well, you get the idea.

From now on, CNN, you need to run everything past Soledad O"Brien before airing it, okay?

ABC News is Totally Objective -- Haha, just kidding, they're horrible.

From ABC's NewsOTUS blog/website/thingy:

Texas Toast: What A Tea Party Candidate's Win Means For Washington

Well, obviously it means nothing for Washington since what he's won is the Texas GOP primary and not the general election, which he would have to also win in order to go to Washington, but please, do go on.

August 1, 2012

He's already being called the next Marco Rubio.
They said, as if that were a compliment.

Conservative Republican Ted Cruz, who scored an upset — but rock-solid — victory over Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in yesterday's Texas U.S. Senate runoff is being hailed today as the second coming of the current Florida senator and vice presidential short-lister.

"Just like the upstart Rubio, who started with long odds but defeated long time incumbent Florida Governor Charlie Christ in the 2010 GOP Primary with major support from the Tea Party, Cruz did exactly the same thing in Texas," the Christian Broadcasting Network's David Brody wrote in an analysis of last night's results.

And who has more credibility than a reporter from a network founded by Pat Robertson? To whom else could you possibly turn for legitimate political analysis?

Okay, maybe.

By Election Day, Cruz, a former Texas solicitor general, had already overtaken Dewhurst in recent polls. Cruz had the backing of Tea Party stalwarts like Sarah Palin and Sen. Jim DeMint whereas Dewhurst won the support of establishment figures like Texas Gov. Rick Perry, the erstwhile presidential hopeful.

Um, are we pretending that Rick Perry is not a teabagger? Did he not speak in front of those teabagging rallies? Wasn't it at one of those rallies that he talked about possible secession?

“Texas is a unique place. When we came into the union in 1845, one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that.”
- Texas Governor Rick Perry hinting at secession at a Tea Party rally today

Thank you, Donklephant.com!

And how is Jim DeMint not an "establishment" figure? He's been in either the House or the Senate since 1999! How long do you have to be there before you're "established?"

I'm a loner, Dottie. A rebel! *

Is maybe the point that htere really is no longer any distinction between the Republican "establishment" and the Birthers, Birchers, Tenthers and Thruthers who gather under the umbrella of the "Tea Party?" Oris it too much to expect for ABC to connect those dots? I guess it would interfere with their whole "Tea Party - outsider - rebel - grassroots" narrative.

So, what does one Republican's victory over a fellow GOPer in the bright red state of Texas mean in the grand scheme of things?

As Brody noted: "Eventually the media and others will realize that the Tea Party is not only far from dead it's just warming up."

Oh, I'm sorry. I thought this was a "report" from a "news" organization, not  promotional material from FreedomWorks.
Also, I'm not sure that Texas is really all that bright red anymore. It's projected to be a swing state by 2016. But why would you bother checking into that? I mean it took me literally almost an entire minute to type "Texas Swing State" into the Google and come up with these:

Obama predicts Texas will soon be a swing state
www.theblaze.com/    Posted on July 18, 2012 at 9:47am

www.usnews.com › Opinion › Robert Schlesinger

So, how could I expect ABC to put that much effort into its stenography reportage?

But regardless of who wins control of the Senate this November, we know that the upper body in Washington is going to be as polarized and uncompromising as ever, notes ABC News Political Director Amy Walter. Conservative Republicans like Cruz and Richard Murdouck in Indiana won because they insisted they wouldn't be part of a "go along, get along" culture.

Yeah, let's pretend that it's all of the Senate that is uncompromising. Let's pretend that one side hasn't bent over backwards to be accomodating while the other side has just filibustered everything time after time after time.

To put it another way, as one smart Republican strategist told the Note: "The fact the Tea Party can win is the 2010 story; whether they can govern and what the 'establishment' will do to retool is the question." SARAH PALIN SEND 'CONGRATS'. ABC's Shushannah Walshe points us toward Sarah Palin's Facebook page, which includes this note: "Congratulations to Ted Cruz! This is a victory both for Ted and for the grassroots Tea Party movement. This primary race has always been about the kind of leadership we need in D.C. Our goal is not just about changing the majority in the Senate. It is about the kind of leadership we want. Ted Cruz represents the kind of strong conservative leadership we want in D.C."

Yeah, I know there should be a paragraph break in there or something, but that is an exact cut & paste from the ABC site. But that's not the point. The point is, that in an analysis of a story about electoral politics, ABC cites a reporter from the Pat Robertson Network, a "smart Republican strategist" and Sarah fucking Palin. Now that's objectivity!

Y'know, if you have to write a disclaimer this long,

maybe you should just not write the column.

Facts don't support Obama's charges against Romney

By David Gergen, CNN Senior Political Analyst
updated 6:59 PM EDT, Mon July 16, 2012

Um, I'm pretty sure that they do, but let's hear what an objective, unbiased source, you know, a "journalist," has to say on the subject. You are objective, aren't you, Mr. Gergen?

 http://blogs.artinfo.com/modernartnotes/files/2011/01/Gergen.jpg
Eeeeehhhhhhh. . . . .

Let me acknowledge upfront what I have said several times on CNN: I have a past relationship with the top partners at Bain that is both personal and financial. I have worked with them in support of nonprofit organizations such as City Year. I have given a couple of paid speeches for Bain dinners, as I have for many other groups. I was on the board of a for-profit child care company, Bright Horizons, that was purchased by Bain Capital. It was a transaction with financial benefits for all board members and shareholders, including me.

Um, that sound like you have a bias. You have personally profited from your association with Bain, both being paid directly by them for speeches and from being on the winning side of one of their buyouts. I think that's pretty much the dictionary definition of having a bias.

So, yes, I have a bias. But let me also add how that bias plays out: I have come to admire and like the leaders of Bain Capital

So you have a bias, but don't worry because you really like the Bain people? The people who have paid you lots of money? You like those people, do you?

http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2011/images/04/22/t1larg.david.gergen.jpg

I have come to admire and like the leaders of Bain Capital because I have learned firsthand that in a private equity industry, where there are obviously some predatory companies, Bain stands out for the respect in which it is generally held

By whom? By whom is it held in respect? By those who profited from their association with it?

Bain stands out for the respect in which it is generally held and for the generous philanthropy of some of its partners. Nothing I have seen so far has shaken that view.

None of the paychecks that I have seen so far has shaken that view.
By the way, generous philanthropy is often used as a means of softening one's public image or assuaging one's guilty conscience when one has made a great fortune off of the misery of others.  Just sayin'.

Has Romney basically lied about when he actually departed Bain? Has he tried to mislead the public or investors? Here we come to the heart of the recent controversy. I may be wrong but based on what we know so far, I would conclude that we do not have persuasive evidence to show that he has.

Unless you, y'know, read newspapers or something.

Romney has argued for years that after he was called in to rescue the Salt Lake City Olympics in February 1999, he turned his full attentions there and no longer exercised active management at Bain. The story is a complicated one because Bain was a complex partnership and because the company filed various SEC papers after February 1999 still listing Romney in various key roles, including CEO and chairman. But if one takes time to look behind the SEC filings, what emerges is much more supportive of Romney's statements.

Oh, it's okay. Romney's not lying now, he was lying to the SEC back then. It's not like that's some sort of crime or something.

http://images.nymag.com/images/2/daily/2008/10/20081017_gergen2_250x250.jpg

It is? Since when?

The crazy thing is that American mainstream journalism has actually sunk so low that Gergen probably didn't even need to disclose his enormous conflict of interest. It's not like CNN has a whole big bunch of integrity left.

Tucker Carlson doesn't seem to realize what network he's on

Because he says this on FOX:

How do you sit there in the FOX studio and wonder why don't conservatives start their own media outlets?

Oh, right. These people live in an alternate universe in which President Obama is a bomb-throwing radical leftist and conservatives have no voice.

Random thoughts about Sarah Palin on the Today Show

1. Goddammit, I swore I would never write about Palin again. And yet, here I go.

2. Come on, NBC, have some fucking dignity. This horrible woman takes every opportunity to discredit the profession of journalism, constantly accusing you of bias, bad faith, and bearing false witness, not to mention just "makin' stuff up," and you reward her by feeding her insatiable lust for fame and attention? She's made no secret of her contempt for you, why lend her any of what remains of your credibility?

3. That stupid "Tweet." Going to go rogue and infiltrate some turf. You were invited on the show, you ridiculous imbecile! You're not infiltrating anything. You're selling out, and you're using the same weak rationale that every sellout has used, pretending that you're going to take them down from the inside, or whatever. Nobody's buying it.

http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/01LR6Wu23AaKi/610x.jpg
Except maybe these paint-huffers.

4. The whole "oh my God, newspapers!" and "hey, I'm writing on my hand" schtick? I don't know whether to pity you or congratulate you on being self-aware enough to realize that you are a walking punchline of a self-parody.

5. You seriously have the balls to say this about Katie Couric? "And, frankly, I'm ecstatic we beat the 'perky one,'
The Perky One? Your whole shameful career is based on being the perky one. Your only political "skill" is your ability to say despicable, hateful things with a cutesy-poo smile and wink. You invented perky-as-substitute-for-anything-of-substance. The only reason Bill Kristol was smitten enough with you to twist McCain's arm to ad you to the ticket is your smarmy perkiness.

Yes, yes, and those.

Well, it's about goddamn time!

How the Hell did it take this long?

Pat Buchanan out indefinitely at MSNBC

http://cdn.crooksandliars.com/files/uploads/2009/07/Pat%20Buchanan_f4b6b.jpg

Why was Pat Buchanan ever on MSNBC to begin with? I could see the scumbags at FOX trotting him out, although I would think that even they might steer clear of him in order to protect their "we're not racist, but. . ." veneer. But MSNBC? It never did make any sense. I never got why Rachel Maddow, in particular, treats him like a curmudgeonly but lovable old uncle.

http://towleroad.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c730253ef01157211b591970b-800wi

How is it that any legitimate outlet would keep trotting out a man who regularly says things like:

The poor homosexuals -- they have declared war upon nature, and now nature is extracting an awful retribution.
--Pat Buchanan, discussing AIDS in 1983, quoted from Political Amazon's "Quotes from Hell"

There were no politics to polarize us then, to magnify every slight. The "negroes" of Washington had their public schools, restaurants, bars, movie houses, playgrounds and churches; and we had ours.
-- Pat Buchanan, when discussing race relations in the 1950s, in Right from the Beginning, Buchanan's 1988 autobiography, quoted from Political Amazon's "Quotes from Hell"

How, then, can the feds justify favoring sons of Hispanics over sons of white Americans who fought in World War II or Vietnam?
-- Pat Buchanan, discussing affirmative action, January 23, 1995, quoted from Political Amazon's "Quotes from Hell"

Hitler's success was not based on his extraordinary gifts alone. His genius was an intuitive sense of the mushiness, the character flaws, the weakness masquerading as morality that was in the hearts of the statesmen who stood in his path.
-- Pat Buchanan, in a 1977 column, The Guardian, January 14, 1992, quoted from Political Amazon's "Quotes from Hell"

Rail as they will about "discrimination," women are simply not endowed by nature with the same measures of single-minded ambition and the will to succeed in the fiercely competitive world of Western capitalism.
-- Pat Buchanan, November 22, 1983, quoted from Political Amazon's "Quotes from Hell"

 (all quotes VIA)

http://www.politicalaffairs.net/assets/Uploads/HitlerChurchill.jpg
Also this.

Somehow, MSNBC has felt okay about putting this man on its airwaves for years.

MSNBC’s Griffin apparently believes, however, that Buchanan’s newest work
has crossed a line.

Ohhhhh. Crossed a line. Where exactly was this line, because it seems like Buchanan hasn't seen that line in the rearview mirror for about a hundred miles.

So, apparently this "line" is situated somewhere between "I think [Barack Obama]'s affirmative action all the way." and "Those who believe the rise to power of an Obama rainbow coalition of peoples of color means the whites who helped to engineer it will steer it are deluding themselves. The whites may discover what it is like to ride in the back of the bus."

Apparently, what it took for MSNBC to finally admit that Buchanan is a racist embarrassment to their network was for Pat to publish an entire book of his paranoid white-supremacist nightmares, and then for the "Color of Change" folks to spend like a year bringing this to their attention until they could finally deny it no longer.

Oh, but don't worry, Grand Dragon Pat hasn't actually been fired, just "suspended indefinitely."

The network executive said that there has been no decision as to whether Buchanan will be allowed at any point to re-join the network’s political team.

Which is sort of like an oncologist saying that he hasn't yet decided whether or not to put the tumor back in.

Fuck You, NPR

NPR host’s involvement in Occupy D.C. leads to her firing

A public radio host was fired on Thursday after the conservative political site The Daily Caller exposed her role as a spokeswoman for Occupy 2011, the faction of Occupy Wall Street movement occupying Washington's Freedom Plaza.

http://media.zenfs.com/en/blogs/thecutline/lsimeone_WDAV.jpg
Lisa Simeone, NPR

You know, NPR, you can throw as many sacrificial lambs onto their altar as you want, they are never going to like you. They are never going to stop attacking you or trying to de-fund you. Do you think that CNN getting in bed with the Tea Party has stopped the wingnuts from referring to them as the "Communist News Network?" (it hasn't)
You could remake yourself as FOX Jr. and it wouldn't matter, because their problem with you has nothing to do with what you actually are or what you actually say. As long as you exist, they can keep telling their brain-dead mob that their tax dollars are being used to promote left-wing propaganda or whatever, and their idiot followers will stay angry and frightened enough to keep buying their books or listening to their radio show or watch their bullshit network, because none of them will ever actually tune in to NPR to see for themselves whether this alleged bias actually exists.

Is this firing an attempt to make up for the Juan Williams firing? Because a) it won't, and b) this is not a similar situation. Juan Williams was allowed to work for the FOX propaganda mill  for years without being fired. It wasn't until he said something offensive about Muslims that he was let go. Lisa Simeone has not been accused of saying anything offensive about anyone. She has merely been accused of participating in the Occupy movement. Look at your own press release:

"We recently learned of World of Opera host Lisa Simeone's participation in an Occupy D.C. group," NPR communications SVP Dana Davis Rehm wrote in a memo to affiliates. "We're in conversations with WDAV about how they intend to handle this. We of course take this issue very seriously."

What the hell is that? You're taking what issue seriously? If someone was to read this paragraph who had never heard of "Occupy D.C." they would think that it must be an organized crime family or some group of skinheads or something. Why would her participation in a peaceful demonstration be something needs to be "handled?" Why is that something that you "take very seriously?" It only makes sense if you begin with the assumption that everyone knows that the Occupy movement is engaged in illegal or immoral activities, and that any association with them would be cause for concern.
Your press release would make sense if Simeone had participated in, say a NAMBLA parade, or had been a spokesperson for the Army of God or something. Then it would make sense to call up WDAV and say "how do you want to handle this?"
Also, Lisa Simeone is not a journalist. She hosts the freaking World of Opera, for fuck's sake. So it's not like you can claim that her participation had compromised her objectivity.

http://mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/op.jpg

I don't know what's worse about this story, the actual firing or the way Yahoo! News chose to cover it.
Because they chose to say shit like this:

The concern is not entirely sudden. Last year, the radio network former political correspondent Juan Williams [sic] for confessing on Fox News's "O'Reilly Factor" that he felt apprehensive when he would see Islamic passengers in airports. Williams' ouster eventually led to the resignation of NPR chief Vivian Schiller's, and a black eye for its image.

Oh, here comes the false equivalency express, right on time!

And earlier this year, conservative media prankster James O'Keefe captured an NPR fundraising executive on video making disparaging remarks about Republicans and the tea party movement to two conservative activists posing as Islamic donors.
Okay, that's just a lie. O'Keefe edited the video to make it seem as if they were making disparaging remarks about Republicans and the Tea Party.  And James O'Keefe is not a "prankster." He is a deceptive, dishonest libelous smear merchant.

It's also true that Simeone's role at the network isn't simply limited to opera coverage. According to her bio on NPR.org, Simeone has "developed a loyal following for her unusual mix of programming--classical, folk and jazz, along with provocative reports, interviews and call-in shows on everything from anthropology and neuroscience to philosophy to media criticism."

Oh, not just opera, also jazz and folk music? Oh, yeah she's got to go!

And, as Poynter's Julie Moos noted, this is not Simeone's first stint as an activist. In 1994, Simeone helped organize demonstrations outside a Baltimore courthouse to protest violence against women.

Oh my God! She came out against violence against women? What a controversial stand! Well, I can see why NPR would not want to be associated with such a radical firebrand! It is absolutely essential to maintain an air of impartiality when dealing with a contentious issue like "is violence against women bad?"

http://muslimmatters.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/muslims-against-violence-against-women.jpg

Well, that's one opinion. Now with an opposing view. . .

Lisa Simeone has addressed her firing in an e-mail to the Baltimore Sun. You can read the whole thing here.

But here are a couple of excerpts:

This sudden concern with my political activities is also surprising in light of the fact that Mara Liaason reports on politics for NPR yet appears as a commentator on Fox TV, Scott Simon hosts an NPR news show yet writes political op-eds for national newspapers, Cokie Roberts reports on politics for NPR yet accepts large speaking fees from businesses.  Does NPR also send out "Communications Alerts" about their activities?
And:
What is NPR afraid I'll do -- insert a seditious comment into a synopsis of Madame Butterfly?

Oh, SNAP!

So, in summary, fuck you, NPR. I'm glad that I have never donated to you. I'll save my donation dollars for Pacifica Radio, who manage to get by without sucking up for corporate money.

Six things "Occupy Wall Street" needs to be considered a legitimate movement

Know How I Know?

 1) Know how I know that Anthony Weiner is innocent?

Because Andrew Breitbart is involved.

In the same way that if Hugh Heffner is involved with something, it's going to involve naked women, if Andrew Breitbart is involved, it's a dishonest slander. Not that that's going to keep CNN from having him on and pretending he hasn't been shown over and over again to be a baldfaced liar. Damn liberal media!

Honest to God, how does the coversation in the newsroom not go something like:
"Hey, a congressman is involved in some sort of dong-related scandal!"

"Oh, that could be big news, who's the source?"

"Oh, it's Breitbart, never mind."

You might as well report stories form The Onion. At least there's an off-chance that they might accidentally be true.
But no, you bring this pile of sleaze onto your show to spout even more scurrilous allegations about Rep. Weiner supposedly having "relationships with young women?"

Also: This guy?

This guy is getting lots of young women? This guy? Really?

2) Know how I know that Gov. Rick Perry has ZERO chance of ever being president?

Because Bill Kristol thinks he would be "formidable."

Remember the last wingnut governor that Kristol thought would be a powerful national political force?

How'd that work out again?

Oy. Don't remind me!
Oh, and also this:

“If [Hillary Clinton] gets a race against John Edwards and Barack Obama, she’s going to be the nominee. Gore is the only threat to her, then. … Barack Obama is not going to beat Hillary Clinton in a single Democratic primary. I’ll predict that right now.” —William Kristol, Fox News Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006

So, even if Gov. Perry hadn't flirted with the idea of secession, even if he hadn't done this:

Texas, which may balance its budget by firing thousands of teachers, plans to commit $25 million in state funds to Formula One auto racing each year for a decade.
Even if he didn't look like this:

He would still have no chance just because the laws of nature dictate that anything coming from the mouth of William Kristol is necessarily  going to be incorrect. If God Himself had planned on making Rick Perry president, he would have to change his plans after hearing William Kristol put his stink on Perry.

Kristol said "formidable?"
Augh, now I have to send Perry to a crushing, humiliating defeat!
